Best Ontario Provincial Park Killbear

Over the last several years I have dragged my family to Provincial Parks all over Ontario for camping, fresh air, and nature. I have researched the top 10 parks to check off the list. Killbear Provincial Park has always been on the list. As my son has started getting older it's harder to convince him that this is a good idea. I am determined to keep this tradition alive.

Killbear is just over three hour's drive from the Waterloo Region. Straight up the 400 on the beautiful Georgian Bay coastline. This is a large park with lots of site options. We now like electric sites even if we are using the tent only. For us, I chose Lighthouse Point campground. I like to be near the main comfort station but I chose poorly and was way too close, spot 1470 is directly in front. If you like a great site with a beautiful private beach choose 1458. Us having the dog she would cry all day trying to get off the leash and in that water but I would have loved staying there.

Our site was great, for the flat area, sand flooring three picnic tables which I loved. I could make one into the kitchen without having to move everything to eat and the extra was for doing the dishes. This area had a large tree coverage, no baking in the mid-day sun.

We took two hikes. Twin Point which was with the best dog beach. The dog beach near our site was an area of water you fell into once you stepped out of a forest. The beach off the path of Twil Point was large and soft sand. It is meant to be for dogs on leash but no one seemed to follow that rule. Luckily when our girl was there swimming we were the only family, didn't feel as bad breaking the rule.

Lighthouse Point Trail has the best sunset view. We did this trail twice since the Kid wanted to see it at night. It was funny to see the change between daytime and kids swimming out to the rock islands and enjoying themselves to the sunset lovefest that seemed to be happening. It was like walking up to Lover's Lane without realizing it (all PG of course).

Every year I hope I see wildlife. I can't believe when I'm driving home that it didn't happen again. This year I saw deer. A family of deer grazing right off the side of the road. They did not care at all that we were there. On the way out of the park the day we were leaving again along the side of the road we saw another. This was special for the family, even the dog knew not to make noise.

Sadly this trip didn't have any live bears but I did go through the Learning Centre to get a big surprise from this beauty!

The hope when you go to a remote area is to see the beautiful night sky. Sometimes it can be tough if the cloud cover doesn't cooperate. Luckily on this trip, the sky was lit up most beautifully. If you are an avid astronomer this would be a great place for you. We walked down to the beach attached to our campground to get out of the tree cover and were rewarded with this beautiful sight.

No camping night can be complete without smores and a roaring fire. The colour show is special thanks to Magic Fire which can be purchased at your local Giant Tiger.

Killbear is said to have fantastic fishing. We tried but didn't catch anything. I love casting and taking in the peaceful view when fishing, I wasn't disappointed to not have to wrestle a fish off my hook but I know the Kid would love to catch something sometime soon. There are a lot of places to put your hook in the water here with 12 km of shoreline and beautiful calm waters to canoe on. We chose sunset on the rocks by the dog beach I wouldn't suggest it! Beautiful and peaceful but no fish.

As a family, we agreed this was one of our favorite Provincial Parks. It has it all for us. It was big enough to keep us occupied when we wanted but peaceful when we wanted to take it all in. If our dog's sleep home was any indicator we filled our trip with family fun!
