Ontario Adventure #38 Port Dover, Selkirk Provincial Park and Bonnieheath Estate

June is a great month to get out for a road trip. With the last PD Day of the school year, I thought let's start our summer road trips! Knowing my guys don't like to sit in the car for too long a journey to Lake Erie was the perfect drive time. The coast of Lake Erie has plenty of great spots from Turkey Point and Port Burwell which I have already written about https://www.myontarioadventures.com/post/ontario-adventure-24-port-burwell-and-long-point still feeling Port Burwell is the best off-leash beach. On this trip we headed to Selkirk Provincial Park https://www.ontarioparks.com/park/selkirk and the town of Port Dover.

From Kitchener, this drive is just over an hour. With snacks for us and the dog, we headed out to our first stop Selkirk. On the Ontario parks site, I saw that this location had a dog beach. Since it's so close to Port Burwell I thought to compare the two. Well it's not what we were hoping for. The beach for dogs wasn't well signed but what we found was an area that was too rocky to let her get in the water and didn't look it's best water quality for us to feel safe if she drank it.

What this park does have, is a great picnic area for a very large group. The campsites are grass instead of sand and dirt like a lot of popular provincial campgrounds. With how close this is located to Lake Erie and all the little towns it might be a good spot to make a base for lots of little day trips. I will say it wasn't for us and we didn't stay long.

We headed to Port Dover for some lunch and a walk down the pier. The lighthouse is a pretty famous part of Part Dover and is an attraction that is well-maintained.

The town beach is not dog-friendly and isn't very large. It is a sand beach not rock, also on the tiny side but looks well maintained and for a random day in June, it was being well used. Families had set up tents and shelters.

With lunchtime fast approaching we went to Willie's. One street back from the beach with an outside open patio. When traveling with the pup this is always the trickiest part. Where we can bring her for us to eat? With a little research ahead of time I found this restaurant. They don't have a website or much online presence. I thought it would be helpful to post their menu. The servings were large and delicious. The kid and I also got ice cream after and enjoyed every lick!!

Wanting to beat the traffic home we had one last stop. The area might not be known for its wineries like the Niagara area but there is a strip of the area that should not be ignored for Ontario wines. We stopped by Bonnieheath Estate Lavender & Winery. The lavendar isn't in full bloom until later in the summer but we did get to enjoy the grounds. I would recommend going when the lavender is in bloom I bet it's a gorgeous site!

We couldn't leave the Estate without a wine tasting and delicious ciders plus as the kid said the best slushies around! Try their honey I was so glad I brought a jar home. My favorite cider was fresh apple, so tasty.

This was a great road trip to start our summer of adventure!
